Amazon Fire HD 8 (2024) tablets bring memory and camera updates (and AI features)

Amazon’s newest Fire HD 8 tablet for 2024 is… a lot like the company’s 2022 model of this budget tablet. It’s the same size and shape, has the same display, and has the same processor. But the good news is that it also has the same low price tag… and does bring a couple of significant updates.

The new Amazon Fire HD 8 has 50% more RAM than its predecessor, and a slightly better rear camera. It has a list price of $100, but Amazon is selling the new 14th-gen Amazon Fire HD 8 for as little as $55 if you order one between today and October 9, 2024.

The biggest change in this year’s model is that Amazon is that an entry-level model with 32GB of storage now comes with 3GB of RAM, while 64GB models have 4GB of RAM.

Customers who purchased a 12th-gen Fire HD 8 got just 2GB of RAM no matter how much storage was included… unless they opted for the higher-priced Fire HD 8 Plus, which had 3GB of memory.

This year Amazon is phasing out the Plus model, which means that there’s no longer an option to get an 8 inch Amazon tablet with support for wireless charging. But since the Fire HD 8 now includes just as much memory and the same 5MP rear camera as the Fire HD 8 Plus, that’s the only thing you’re losing out on if you opt for the new model.

There are also new 2024 versions of the Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids and Kids Pro tablets, which carry higher price tags, but come with a rugged case, a 6-month subscription to Amazon Kids+, no lock screen ads, and a 2-year worry-free guarantee (get a free replacement for a broken tablet, no questions asked).

One other major change? Amazon is bringing AI features to its Fire tablets. This isn’t exclusive to the new Fire HD 8, as the new AI features will be rolling out to all Amazon tablets soon. The AI features should seem familiar to anyone who’s been paying attention to the generative AI capabilities that every major tech company has been building into its products over the past year or so:

  • Writing Assist: The Fire OS keyboard will have a new Writing Assistant action to help you in any app including documents, email messages, and social media ports. There are pre-set styles to change the language and tone of text, options to receive grammar suggestions, or to make your writing more concise or elaborate.
  • Webpage Summaries: The Silk web browser can provide summaries of the content of articles on the web.
  • Wallpaper Creator: Choose from a “curated prompt” or use text to generate pictures.

Amazon says these AI features “will begin rolling out to all compatible Fire tablets later this month.”

One other thing to keep in mind? While Amazon’s tablets ship with the company’s own Fire OS software, that’s basically just a heavily modified version of Google Android that features tight integration with Amazon’s apps, services, and storefronts. While Amazon Fire tablets don’t support the Google Play Store or other Google apps out of the box, since the newest model is virtually identical to the 2022 model in most respects, you should be able to follow the same steps to install the Google Play Store on the new model.
